Wedding Cake Traditions

Wedding Cake Traditions

Cake traditions have come a long way since Ancient Roman times when a groom would break a loaf of bread over his bride’s head for good luck .

Here are 5 cake traditions  you and your partner can include in your wedding.

It used to be only the bride who cut the wedding cake but today its normal for both partners share in the cake-cutting ritual. Family, friends and photographers  look forward to the moment the couple joins hands around the knife.

The second act of the traditional cake cutting ceremony is when the bride and groom feed each other a small bite of cake. This can be very romantic and sweet, symbolizing a commitment to provide for one another and a show of love and affection.

 Saving the Top Tier

Most couples cannot resist saving the top tier of their wedding cake to eat on their first anniversary or a christening ceremony. In the past, christenings were often within a year of the wedding so this made perfect sense. Now, most couples are more likely to create a small cake eating ceremony around their first anniversary.

In medieval times, bakers would stack individual cake layers as high as possible for a couple’s wedding dessert. The newlyweds’ fate was then put to the ultimate test when the couple had to kiss over the towering layers. If successful, the couple was guaranteed a prosperous life together. Today, tiered wedding cakes are extremely popular.

Sleeping With Piece of Cake Under the Pillow

It is thought that a person sleeping with a piece of wedding cake under their pillow will dream of their future partner that night. This custom dates back almost 300 years and is often practically combined with wedding favors being tiny, perfect replicas of the wedding cake.

Wedding Photography Styles

Wedding Photography Styles

Wedding photography styles fall into three main categories. Reportage, contemporary and traditional wedding photography.

When choosing your photographer (big decision) have a look at all the styles and decide which one suits you.

Photographers  sometimes combine styles for better coverage.

Also know as  journalistic or documentary wedding photography.

This style of photography is quite new to wedding photography. It has become  popular in the recent years. It is a natural approach from the photographer who follows the couple and the guests throughout the day while recording the events of the wedding as they happen.

The main goal  is to make a story out of the wedding by capturing natural  moments rather than poses.  Many wedding photographers accommodate formal shots as well.

Also known as fashion or editorial

Contemporary wedding photography is  inspired by editorial fashion photography. The emphasis is on creating visually interesting images. Although shots are set up, they are less formal or rigid. The photographer aims to find interesting spots as a backdrop and uses or creates strong light effects and unusual angles.

Also known as  classic wedding photography.

Traditional wedding photography was the only style in fashion until digital cameras came along. Carefully posed shots of groups ranging from the whole wedding party to just the wedding couple themselves.

Traditional wedding photographers rarely capture candid moments, they usually concentrate on the key moments and group shots only and they shoot a set list of photographs.

Wedding Veils

Wedding Veils

Are you planning on wearing a traditional wedding veil?

We thought it might be fun to find out why we wear them. The truth is, it seems no one is entirely sure.

Veils have been around in various different cultures for many many years. They have gone through peaks and troughs of popularity and have taken on many different forms and colours.

We have found some theories on why brides wear them..what do you think, true or not?

 Keeping Evil Spirits away

Wedding veils started in Roman times, when brides were covered from head to toe in a massive red veil called ‘flammeum’. Romans were scared of evil spirits so they thought that making it look like the bride was on fire this would scare the spirits off.

Secret identity

In early weddings when marriages were arranged  through families, with the bride given away in exchange for money and goods. The fathers giving away their daughters wanted to hide their face until the last possible minute, so that a less attractive bride wouldn’t void the agreement.

Runaway bride

Veils and trains were used to weigh down the bride and stop them from running away when they met their new husband for the first time.

Symbol of purity and virginity

Not much more to say on this one 🙂

Gift wrapped

Tradition is that the father of the bride lowers the veil on his daughter’s face, in order to ‘gift’ her to her new husband. Once they’re about to get married, the husband lifts the veil symbolising ownership of his bride.

Love is blind

In the Jewish faith, veils act as a public display that the groom isn’t just marrying his bride because of how she looks.

Charity Wedding Favours

A lot of couples ask us are wedding favours necessary, are they a waste of money, do guests really want or expect them?

Well, if you are looking for a fabulous alternative to tradition, how about Charity wedding favours?

They are a great way of supporting the brilliant charities doing amazing work all over the world and we love the idea of being able to give your guests a little gift without being wasteful.

Confetti Alternatives

Confetti Alternatives

We love weddings and one of our favourite parts of the day is the waving off from the ceremony, throwing confetti on the newlyweds.

Confetti often gets overlooked in the planning or is seen as old fashioned but it is making a comeback. Whilst the traditional paper variety may not be welcome at some venues, there are some great alternatives that you could consider.

Here are our favourites:

A twist on traditional confetti, how about throwing a little bit of glitter and sparkle with cute foil hearts (or hundreds of other shapes)

Paper Planes

One of the funniest ideas, sure to amuse both old and young is to go old school with paper planes.

Handy for cleaning up afterwards, you could even write a message on them for your guests.

Who can resist the fun of blowing bubbles! Just a word of warning though – bubble liquid stains delicates so keep a safe distance from the over-enthusiastic guests.

Perfect if you don’t want to make to much of a mess why not have a balloon exit – just make sure you have your balloons filled with helium so they float.

Twirling Ribbons

Get your guests to wave their happiness for the married couple with pretty ribbon wands

Tinkling Bells

Probably the cutest of all the confetti alternatives, imagine the chimes of tiny tinkling bells to ring in the newly weds

Lavender Confetti

For more natural confetti alternatives lavender seeds top the list. Not only eco-friendly, it smells great too! It blows away in the wind, leaving no mess.

Not only eco friendly, but wildlife friendly, congratulate the love birds by tossing bird seed.

Golden Leaves

Leaves, who would have thought it!? Eco friendly and free! Great idea for an Autumn wedding.
